A full-day celebration of America's 250th birthday fills the Arts and Industries Building with hands-on activity zones, educational projects, historical reenactors, dance demonstrations, live music, singalongs, and performances by Smithsonian Associates Discovery Theater. Outdoor activities are planned for the Haupt Garden when weather allows.

Planning notes

  • Admission is free and open to everyone; families should be prepared for possible outdoor entrance lines.
  • Doors open at the building's north entrance on Jefferson Drive.
  • The event is rain or shine, though severe weather may change garden activities.
  • Outside food is allowed in designated picnic areas; nearby museum cafés sell food.
  • The building and garden have accessible entrances, restrooms, and paths. The Folklife stage will provide live ASL interpretation.
  • Metro is strongly encouraged because National Mall parking is limited; Smithsonian and L'Enfant Plaza are the nearest stations.
