This two-part beginner workshop turns close observation of plants into a hand-embroidered botanical image. Artist and Washington Studio School faculty member Heather Kerley will guide participants through drawing, fabric preparation, image transfer, and introductory stitching.

The morning begins at the U.S. Botanic Garden Conservatory with an introduction to plant morphology and time to sketch several favorite specimens from the collection. After a one-hour break for participants to travel independently to Washington Studio School, the class resumes with instruction in preparing an embroidery hoop and transferring one selected drawing to fabric.

Participants will begin sewing with foundational techniques such as running stitch, backstitch, stem stitch, and French knots. Advance registration is required. The workshop is best suited to older children who can manage sustained drawing, travel between two venues, and several hours of detailed handwork with an accompanying adult.
