This 90-minute guided tour explores how University of Arizona engineers and optical scientists create 8.4-meter telescope mirrors. It begins with an introduction inside historic Steward Observatory, then continues to the working Mirror Lab beneath the football stadium to examine the glass-melting, polishing and optical-testing processes used for projects including the Giant Magellan Telescope.

Before you go

  • Arrive at Steward Observatory 15 minutes before the scheduled start; the tour leaves promptly.
  • Participants must be at least 10, and minors need an accompanying adult.
  • Expect extended standing, walking and several flights of stairs.
  • Flat, closed-toe shoes are mandatory; sandals are not permitted.
  • Backpacks, purses and other bags cannot enter. Bring only items that fit in a pocket. A disposable water bottle is allowed but must be discarded before entering the lab.

Self-pay parking is available along Cherry Avenue and in South Stadium Garage. Contact the tour team in advance about disability-related accommodations.
