A museum actor portrays Pauline “Polly” Smith, a Tampa Bay Hotel telegraph operator from 1913. Through Polly’s perspective, the performance explores new technology, rapid social change, and the opportunities and tensions encountered by career women in the early 20th century. Barbara Eaker performs the role.
The 30-minute, research-based living-history presentation is included with museum admission. Seating is limited and offered first come, first served, so families should arrive early.
Planning your visit
The museum does not permit strollers, food, beverages, or large bags and backpacks inside. The historic interior uses comparatively dim 1891-style lighting and plays soft classical music. Performance transcripts for visitors who are hard of hearing may be requested at least two weeks beforehand. Accessible ramps, restrooms, designated parking, and a first-come wheelchair are available; free overflow parking is about a five-minute walk away in the Thomas Parking Garage.
