This living-history performance introduces Henry A. Dobson, a 20-year-old first sergeant with Company D of the 1st D.C. Volunteers during the Spanish-American War. Drawing on Dobson’s surviving letters home, actor Chase Tomberlin recounts military life and the young soldier’s experiences in Tampa with insight, enthusiasm, and humor.

The museum’s research-based, single-character presentation lasts 30 minutes and is included with admission. Seating is limited and available first come, first served, so families should plan to arrive early.

Planning your visit

The museum does not allow strollers, food, beverages, or large bags and backpacks. Its authentic 1891 lighting can appear dim, and soft classical music plays throughout the galleries. A performance transcript can be requested for visitors who are hard of hearing with two weeks’ notice. Accessible ramps and restrooms, designated parking, and a complimentary first-come wheelchair are available. Free overflow parking is about a five-minute walk away in the Thomas Parking Garage.
