SFMOMA and the Museum of the African Diaspora present Kahlil Joseph’s 110-minute film BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions, followed by an onstage conversation between Joseph and MoAD public-programs leader Key Jo Lee.
Blending documentary and fictional forms, archival material, and historical and imagined characters, the film travels across 247 years aboard a fictional transatlantic liner. Drawing inspiration from thinkers including W.E.B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, and Saidiya Hartman, it explores collective Black memory through an immersive, nonlinear story.
The screening is part of MoAD’s Limitless film series, which accompanies the exhibition UNBOUND: Art, Blackness, and the Universe. The broader series examines speculative futures, ancestral memory, science fiction, African mythology, and visionary figures across the African Diaspora.
ASL interpretation and assisted-listening accommodations may be requested from publicengagement@sfmoma.org at least ten business days in advance. The substantial runtime, historical themes, and post-film discussion make this most suitable for mature older children.
