San Antonio artist Ricky Armendariz presents an evening centered on Texas Tree of Life: A Tribute to the Independent Spirit of San Antonio, his large oil painting carved into birch plywood. The mural uses a live oak and its roots, branches, people, flags, and symbols to connect the region’s Native heritage, Spanish-mission period, and Texas Revolution history.

Armendariz will discuss the creative process and the more than a year spent carving and painting the work. Guests can hear how imagery from the plants, animals, and cultural traditions of Mexico and the United States shaped the composition, then participate in a question-and-answer session.

Children’s tickets are offered, although the program is primarily an artist talk and is best suited to school-age children who enjoy art or history.
