Explore two swords in the museum’s Japanese art gallery and look closely at the silk cords decorating their handles and scabbards. Families will learn about kumihimo, the Japanese art of braiding these intricate ties, while considering the craftsmanship visible in both the metalwork and textile details.
After visiting the gallery, participants can practice kumihimo in the classroom using thread and a small loom. Museum admission and the art-making activity are free through the monthly Third Saturday family program.
