Expert volunteer Steve Sasaki will be available inside Uprooted: An American Story to answer visitors’ questions and lead more detailed conversations about the exhibition. Drawing on his own family’s experience of Japanese American incarceration during World War II, he discusses subjects including immigration to the United States, daily life in the incarceration camps, and families’ return home after the war.

The exhibition uses survivor-donated artifacts and interactive displays to examine forced removal, incarceration, resistance and Japanese Americans’ continuing work to prevent similar civil-rights violations. Features include a replica barracks and guard tower, a video introduction by George Takei, a theater presentation and an interactive experience built from survivors’ recorded answers.
