Downtown
This full WaterFire lighting adds Clear Currents, a community paddling spectacle celebrating cleaner Rhode Island waterways. After sunset, as many as 80 registered kayaks will travel the river with illuminated Japanese koi mounted on their bows, moving among 76 wood-burning braziers. Onshore programming and vendors open before the fires are lit at approximately 8:03 p.m.
Families may attend as spectators without registering. Participation on the water is restricted to experienced paddlers age 18 or older. Registered paddlers must supply their own solo kayak, paddle, and personal flotation device; kayaks must be under 14 feet, and canoes, paddleboards, inflatables, folding kayaks, and outriggers are not permitted.
Planning your visit
The WaterFire event map shows viewing areas, restrooms, transportation, and accessibility points. Most riverwalks are accessible, though crowds, darkness, and sections of cobblestone can be challenging for strollers and mobility devices. Accessible boat rides are available during full lightings for visitors with disabilities or mobility difficulties, require reservations at least two weeks ahead, and allow one companion; details are in the WaterFire Access Program guide.
