Four artists represented in the My America: An Illustrated Experience exhibition will discuss how family stories, personal keepsakes, and memories became visual art. Their work connects individual experiences—including family labor, migration, conscience, motherhood, and community—to larger chapters in American history.
Chief historian Anne Madarasz moderates a conversation about genealogy, identity, creativity, and the ways personal history contributes to a broader American story. Senior Outreach Archivist Sierra Green will share materials from the Detre Library & Archives and explain how family records and genealogical research can inspire less conventional forms of storytelling.
Families are encouraged to visit the participating artists’ work beforehand in the fifth-floor Barensfeld Gallery. Featured artists are Fredrick H. Carlson, Audra Azoury, Naomi Lees-Maiburg, and Chris Bermudo. American Sign Language interpretation can be requested in advance by emailing programs@heinzhistorycenter.org.
