Foundations of Sumi-e Brushwork: Bamboo

Artist Wei Tai leads a beginner-friendly introduction to Sumi-e ink painting through the study of bamboo. Participants will practice brush control, foundational strokes, ink tones, shading, composition, and the expressive simplicity associated with traditional Japanese ink painting before creating a finished artwork.

No previous painting experience is required, and ink, brushes, paper, and other class materials are supplied. The workshop is intended to be a calm, meditative creative experience; admission to the garden on the same day is included with the workshop ticket.

Practical details

Check-in begins at 8:45 a.m., 15 minutes before instruction starts. Parking is available at the garden, and the Central and Roosevelt light-rail stop is about 0.3 miles away.

Programs that have not reached minimum enrollment 10 days beforehand may be canceled, with affected registrants offered a refund or rescheduling option. Participants who withdraw at least 10 business days before the program may receive a full refund; missed events without sufficient notice forfeit the reservation and payment.
