Astronomer and educator Buddy Muhler leads a one-mile nighttime adventure in East Fairmount Park. The group first explores the Lemon Hill Rim Trail by moonlight while learning about the area’s history and the nocturnal animals found in its woods.
A guided telescope observation follows the hike. Families can examine the moon through a high-powered telescope and learn about lunar cycles, reflective highlands, darker maria, planets, stars, and other visible features. Guests may bring telescopes or high-powered binoculars of their own, as well as a blanket or lawn chair.
The route combines open parkland with hilly trails and involves moderate exertion. It is suitable for families with children 6 and older; minors need tickets and an accompanying adult. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and preferably long pants. Bring water, snacks, and a flashlight, headlamp, or charged phone; no bathrooms or drinking water are available nearby. Cloudy or poor weather may trigger a new date, with refunds issued if rescheduling is not possible.
