Astronomer and science educator Buddy Muhler leads a 1.5-mile nighttime outing through West Fairmount Park. The first portion follows the historic Trolley Trail by moonlight, combining park history with an introduction to the animals active after dark.
The group then turns to the sky for a guided telescope session. Participants can examine the moon’s surface through a high-powered telescope while learning about lunar cycles, reflective highlands, darker maria, visible planets, stars, and other celestial features. Families may bring their own telescope or high-powered binoculars, plus a blanket or lawn chair for the observation.
This moderate hike crosses open parkland and hilly trails and is suitable for families with children 6 and older. Minors must be registered with an adult. Wear hiking shoes and preferably long pants; bring water, snacks, and a flashlight, headlamp, or charged phone. There are no nearby bathrooms. Cloud cover or poor weather may move the program to another date; if rescheduling is impossible, tickets are refunded.
