Opening night for Isamu Noguchi: Metal the Mirror pairs the exhibition with an Obon-inspired lantern celebration. Families can create and hang floating paper lanterns in the museum’s lakeside Sculpture Garden, joining an activity centered on communal remembrance, reflection and the cycle of life. Friends of Koto will perform traditional Japanese harp music.

The exhibition presents nine galvanized-steel sculptures made by Noguchi in 1982–83. Their reflective, evolving surfaces connect with the evening’s exploration of light and with Noguchi’s interest in Japanese cultural traditions and communal space.

Schedule

  • 5:30–6:30 p.m.: Members-only preview, with catered bites and a cash bar
  • 6:30–8 p.m.: Public reception

Exhibition curator Julia Mun will participate in the reception.
