The final installment of New Victory Dance brings three New York City companies together in a program created for young audiences. New Victory Teaching Artists serve as hosts, and a choreographer talk-back includes a chance for families to participate with movement from their seats.

Program C

  • Michael Mao Dance: An excerpt from Weaving pairs forceful, urgent modern dance with pounding drums, using athletic movement to explore strength, beauty and physical possibility.
  • Gibney Company: An excerpt from Vukani—a Xhosa word meaning “to awaken”—looks to elders for guidance. Choreographer Mthuthuzeli November draws on traditional South African movement, street dance, ballet and contemporary dance.
  • EMERGE125: Behavioral Synchrony is an expressive contemporary work set to music by Indigenous electronic group The Halluci Nation. Percussion drives an exploration of the dancers’ spiritual, mental, creative and physical commitment to their work.

Families may arrive up to 45 minutes early for free lower-lobby activities, including experimenting with movement styles, making a dance from an everyday routine, designing a costume and writing appreciation notes to teachers or other inspiring people. The full program lasts 75 minutes, including transitions and the talk-back.

Accessibility and family amenities

Sensory Awareness Notes help families preview the performance. Visitors can borrow fidgets, ear defenders, assistive-listening devices, wheelchairs and other supports from the Accessibility Table downstairs. A quiet Cozy Zone with a live performance feed is open throughout the show. The venue also provides wheelchair and companion seating, stroller parking, booster seats, changing tables and complimentary lockers.
