Vanderbilt University professor emeritus Leonard Folgarait explores what inspired surrealism and why its strange imagery—melted clocks, unexpected creatures, and dreamlike objects—remains recognizable today.

The presentation begins with the European circumstances in which surrealism developed, then looks closely at works by artists including René Magritte, Salvador Dalí, and Meret Oppenheim. Folgarait also considers the movement’s continuing relevance in the contemporary political climate. Advance registration is available, and the ticket page includes free admission for visitors 18 and younger.
