Winged Wonders Summer Camp — Ages 8–10

Campers explore birds, butterflies, and other flying animals while investigating the aerial ecosystem of Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve. This weeklong camp meets daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Camp setup

Children stay with the same counselors throughout the week in a group organized by age. The counselor-to-camper ratio is 1:5; counselors are CPR/first-aid certified, and employees, interns, and volunteers undergo background checks. Camp is outdoors except for bathroom breaks and extreme weather, and campers must manage their bathroom needs independently.

What to bring

• Reusable water bottle
• Nonperishable lunch and two snacks
• Rain jacket and weather-appropriate clothes that may get dirty
• Closed-toe shoes worn with socks

Apply sunscreen and insect repellent before arrival. Phones and toys from home are not permitted during camp.

Arrival and registration logistics

Camp begins and ends at the Nature Play Area near the gazebo. Adults must park, walk campers to and from the area, and complete check-in and checkout; identification may be requested, and children are released only to an authorized pickup person. Before- and aftercare are not available, and late pickup costs $15 per 15 minutes after 4 p.m.

Registration requires an email address at checkout. The organizer sends a camper-information form within 72 business hours, and it must be completed within one week. Medication must arrive with the camper’s name and administration instructions; written authorization is required if a child needs to carry it personally. No refunds are offered for family cancellations after May 1, while an organizer cancellation receives a full refund.
