Curator Emeritus Joel Stone explains what happened when the United States flag first flew over Detroit on July 11, 1796. The talk examines Detroit during the American Revolution, the British departure, and the addition of the Northwest Territories—an area larger than the original thirteen states—to the young country.

The lecture also places Detroit within the complicated history of American expansion, conquest, and what later became known as Manifest Destiny.
