Discover biofluorescence—the patterns and colors some plants and animals reveal under ultraviolet light—during this special all-ages evening. Guest presenter Joseph Ferraro shares photographs and explains the science behind fluorescence before leading visitors outdoors to look for glowing plants, insects and other surprises around the Nature Center grounds.
The evening includes
- A presentation featuring photographs of biofluorescent species
- A guided night hike using UV light to observe fluorescence outdoors
- Connections between biofluorescence and urban wildlife
- After-hours access to the Nature Center’s exhibits and animal habitats
Visitors can also explore Ferraro’s permanent Overlooked photography installation along the outdoor paths and inside the auditorium. Admission is free and no registration is required. Personal vehicles entering Belle Isle require a Michigan Recreation Passport. The venue’s accessibility page describes an accessible restroom, a first-come wheelchair and sensory supports, but does not give specific accessibility details for the night hike.
