Campers entering grades 1–6 get a behind-the-scenes look at how a museum works. They will explore the education collection, consider how specimens are collected and curated, follow an exhibition from initial idea to public display, meet museum staff, and apply what they learn by creating a miniature exhibit of their own. The week also includes time in the museum’s exhibit halls.
Enrollment and supervision
This session has reached capacity. Discovery Camp classes range from 5 to 23 children, with two educators and one or two teen volunteers assigned to each classroom. Educators have completed or are pursuing post-secondary degrees in science, arts, or education; they are background checked and certified in basic CPR and first aid.
What families should know
- A purchased camp ticket and completed Procare registration are both required. Registration requests information about medications, allergies, learning needs, immunizations, and emergency contacts.
- Send a lunch, one or two snacks that need no refrigeration, and a reusable water bottle. Catered lunches with snacks may also be ordered separately.
- Campers must wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing that can get messy or wet. Bring layers for changing indoor temperatures and outdoor activities; younger campers should have a change of clothes.
- Pickup requires valid photo identification, with detailed drop-off and pickup instructions provided in the confirmation email.
- Museum staff generally cannot administer medication. Campers must be able to self-administer required medicine, subject to reasonable ADA accommodations.
The museum’s Discovery Camp policies provide additional health, accessibility, behavior, and cancellation information.
