This Ohio State welcome-week program pairs a drop-in art workshop with a film double feature about teamwork, identity, and chosen family. Families may attend one portion or remain for the full evening.

Before the films

From 4:30–7 PM, the Columbus Collage Collective leads an open workshop where participants can make a visual representation of their hopes, sources of joy, and goals for the coming semester. Materials are supplied and no experience is required. Free pizza is offered at 6 PM while supplies last, and regular movie concessions will be available.

Double feature

At 7 PM, The LEGO Batman Movie follows a solitary Batman who unexpectedly gains a young sidekick and must learn to work with others to save Gotham. The animated comedy-adventure runs 104 minutes. The second feature, The Birdcage, is a 117-minute comedy about a longtime couple who run a drag nightclub and the upheaval that follows when their son becomes engaged to a conservative politician’s daughter. Parents may wish to choose portions of the evening according to their child’s interests and comfort with the later film’s more adult relationship and identity themes.

The event was selected by leaders of the Wexner Center’s Art & Resilience student organization. A limited number of listening devices are available on request, with further details on the venue’s accessibility page.
