Art historians and practicing artists Amira Manzur and Madeleine Afable lead a gallery conversation and hands-on carving activity inspired by Kenzi Shiokava’s wooden assemblages. Participants consider personal and ancestral stories, borderlands, cultural hybridity, and how the artist’s journey across Brazil, Japan, and Los Angeles shaped his work.

After the discussion, visitors can use wood and tools to create individual carved reflections at their own pace. Families may join at any point, with instructions available throughout the space. Accessibility services can be requested from the MCA at 312-397-4076 or access@mcachicago.org.
