Discover how archaeologists investigate a site without excavating it. The program considers the irreversible damage digging can cause—especially to Indigenous communities—and introduces noninvasive research at Angel Mounds State Historic Site in Evansville, Indiana. The site preserves a fortified Mississippian city, occupied from approximately 1150 to 1450 CE, that connected a broad network of Lower Ohio River Valley settlements.
Presenters Sabrina Yeahia and Christina Friberg explain how magnetic gradiometry and ground-penetrating radar can be combined to map what lies underground. Families can see field equipment, including a magnetic gradiometer, and learn how multiple disciplines contribute evidence to an archaeological story.
