Families can look closely at the museum’s medieval-inspired floors and make a tile of their own using air-dry clay and acrylic glazes. The activity draws on the handmade Mercer tiles created for Fenway Court, whose traditional molds feature motifs such as wheels, dragons, flowers, lettering, and patterns inspired by a medieval English priory.
Polly Thayer Starr Studio Intern Gabriel Currie leads the workshop and introduces the history of medieval tile craft and its revival by Arts and Crafts designer Henry Chapman Mercer. Currie is a Boston-based painter and textile artist whose work explores light, color, atmosphere, architecture, and connections among place, history, and identity.
