Volunteer guide Mike Manning leads an approximately 1.5-mile exploration of Castle Island and Fort Independence. The tour traces the site's history from the first fort in 1634 through the present granite fort, with stories involving Edgar Allan Poe, the Quasi-War, the Spanish-American War, Boston Harbor's cleanup, the inner harbor islands, Logan Airport, and Conley Terminal.

The route circles the fort and is expected to continue inside and up to the ramparts for city views. Meet at the outdoor picnic tables to the right of Sullivan's, near the blue beacon pole with a small wind turbine and solar panel.

All are welcome, but capacity is limited and registration should be reserved for people intending to attend. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water; registration also lets organizers communicate weather changes.
